The morphology of the city of Graz is clearly divided into two different types of tissue: on one side there is the city centre carachterized by a dense system of courtyards blocks with the façades that define clearly the edges, the streets outside and the pedestrian and green space in the inside. On the other side there is the typical tissue of the suburban areas, composed by isolated objects floating within a low density space. The competition area belongs to the second category. Our proposal is to extend the quality of the first typology to the project area, increasing density and intensity, but, at the same time, keeping the permeability puculiar of these suburban areas. The result is a new ibrid typology of courtyard building, where the inner space is kept open and used as a sequence of interconnected public spaces.
La morfologia della città di Graz è chiaramente distinguibile in due tipi di tessuto: da una parte il centro storico caratterizzato da un sistema denso di blocchi a corte con le facciate che definiscono in modo netto i margini, tenendo le strade all’esterno e lo spazio comune e verde all’interno; dall’altra parte c’è la seconda tipologia, tipica delle aree suburbane, composta da oggetti isolati che sembrano galleggiare in uno spazio caratterizzato da bassa densità. L’area progettuale, anche se è prossima al centro storico della città, appartiene alla seconda categoria. La nostra proposta è stata quella di estendere la qualità della prima tipologia all’area suburbana, aumentandone la densità e l’intensità, ma, al contempo, cercando di mantenere la permeabilità peculiare della seconda. Questo ci ha permesso di definire una nuova tipologia ibrida dell’edificio a corte, in cui lo spazio centrale viene mantenuto aperto e utilizzato come una sequenza di parchi pubblici, connessi tra di loro.
Metropolitan area of Graz The strategic area, even if it’s very closed to the historic center, is a typical suburban area, composed by isolated objects that seem to be floating in a low-density space.
Urban Concept The development system consists of a simple and precise redefinition of the existing urban pattern, adding to the existing “floating” objects, mixed use buildings to repropose the courtyard typology.
Strip Concept A system of mixed use slabs, towers and public space optimize the narrowness of the site. The new line of public transport complete the redefinition of the strip.
