The project consists in the expansion of Neumarkt’s kindergarten, designed by the architect Othmar Barth. The complex, built in 1976, has an evident compositional peculiarity, remained unaltered over time, which is characterized by the articulation of the roofs and by the aggregation of the same modular volumes. The impossibility of working on the existing building without drastically altering the clear formal and spatial balance of the whole complex drove us to place the expansion in the only marginal and alterable area: the edge of the garden. Therefore, the project is based on a sensible relationship with the context: the aim is trying to interpret the necessary expansion of the original building through a juxtaposition of a new element that interacts with the original building, without seeking any nostalgic mimesis. The result of this process is the shaping of a narrow and stretched body, which folds and contracts following the physical borders of the garden, without altering the harmony of the original complex, in order to enhance the spatial richness of the Barth’s original building. The long horizontal windows along the facades frame an unusual view of the building with its peculiar roof, while the simple volume of the new expansion provides an architectural frame, which enhances by contrast the complex morphology of the original building. The distribution system represents the only element connecting the two bodies, which are thus perfectly distinct although placed side by side on the western side portion of the garden. The building faces almost completely towards the garden, with the exception of two patios on the western side, in order to bring light in the afternoon.
Il progetto prevede l’ampliamento della scuola per l’infanzia di Egna realizzata dall’architetto Othmar Barth. Il complesso costruito nel 1976 presenta una forza compositiva evidente e inalterata nel tempo, che ha nell’articolazione della copertura e dei volumi il suo carattere peculiare. L’impossibilità di lavorare sui volumi esistenti senza alterare drasticamente il delicato equilibrio formale e spaziale di tutto il complesso ha imposto di costruire il nuovo programma nell’unica area ritenuta alterabile e irrisolta rispetto al progetto originale: il margine del giardino. Il nuovo edifico nasce quindi dal rapporto imprescindibile con il luogo e il tema del progetto, cercando di interpretare la necessaria evoluzione dell’edificio originale attraverso un nuovo elemento che si ponga in simbiosi con tutto il complesso, senza però cercare alcuna mimesi nostalgica. Il risultato è la generazione di un corpo stretto e allungato, che si piega e si contrae seguendo i limiti fisici ed edificabili del lotto, perseguendo il duplice obiettivo di non alterare l’armonia del complesso originale e di valorizzare con la propria presenza la ricchezza spaziale dell’edifico di Barth. I lunghi tagli vetrati che corrono lungo la facciata offrono una vista inedita del fronte meridionale e della copertura, mentre il volume dall’aspetto essenziale fornisce una cornice neutra, che esalta per contrasto la complessa morfologia dell’originale. Il sistema distributivo rappresenta l’unico elemento di continuità tra i due corpi, che risultano così perfettamente distinti benché affiancati sul lato occidentale. L’edificio è totalmente rivolto verso lo spazio del giardino, ad eccezione di due patii sul fronte occidentale per portare luce nel pomeriggio.
