Pichler was one of the great mavericks of contemporary European art. During his early career, in 1960s Vienna, he focused his energies on utopian architecture, with designs that attracted international attention. Pichler’s work brings together sculpture, architecture, and drawing in a singular fashion. The artist’s sculptures come into their own in a presentation conceived for them in St. Martin in the province of Burgenland, where the artist lived until the end of his life. Each sculpture has its own architectural shell, made mostly of wood.
The exhibition in Museion Passage presents 11 drawings from its own collection: the cycle “House in the Gorge” (Haus in der Schlucht) from 1991. These drawings show the artist’s plans for building himself a tower in the lower area of the Eggenbach Gorge where he could live from time to time. The drawings were made in preparation for building the House next to the Smithy (Haus neben der Schmiede) in Birchabruck. It was completed in 2002 and, in accordance with the architect’s vision, is a low-rise building lit from above. This house would serve as a retreat for Pichler and a gathering place for the family.
The presentation of the drawings in the Museion Passage serves as a link to the house in Birchabruck. The building is a prime example of Walter Pichler’s “art of not being an architect” (Dietmar Steiner): It looks like architecture but is at the same time sculpture.
Pichler è stato una delle grandi figure di outsider dell’arte contemporanea europea. I suoi esordi si collocano nel contesto dell’architettura utopistica che negli anni sessanta si afferma a Vienna attirando l’attenzione internazionale. Nell’opera di Pichler convergono in modo inconfondibile scultura, architettura e disegno. Le opere sculturali di Pichler trovano una loro presentazione ideale e specifica nell’areale di St. Martin nel Burgenland, dove l’artista ha vissuto fino alla fine della sua vita. Ogni scultura è protetta da un riparo architettonico, quasi sempre in legno.
La mostra allestita a Museion Passage comprende 11 disegni che compongono il ciclo Haus in der Schlucht del 1991. Questi disegni sviluppano l’idea dell’artista di costruire una torre nella parte inferiore della gola del rio Ega da abitare saltuariamente e rappresentano degli studi preparatori a quella che sarà poi la Haus neben der Schmiede (casa vicino alla fucina) costruita nel 2002 a Ponte Nova, un edificio basso illuminato dalla luce naturale proveniente dall’alto. Questa casa era destinata a luogo di ritiro per Pichler stesso e a luogo d’incontro per la famiglia.
La presentazione dei disegni a Museion Passage costituisce un rimando alla Haus neben der Schmiede (casa vicino alla fucina) di Ponte Nova. Essa è un esempio eminente di quella che, riferendosi a Walter Pichler, Dietmar Steiner ha definito “l’arte di non essere architetto”: l’opera appare come architettura, ma al contempo è anche scultura.
