During the 20th century, the city of Bolzano/Bozen has witnessed a considerable territorial and demographic expansion, which has progressively upset the initial social and spatial conditions, transforming the pre-modern rural and mercantile town into the multilayered contemporary city that we are living in. A fundamental role in this growth process is related to the numerous social housing complexes, which historically represent, in the case of Bolzano/Bozen, the basic elements generating the construction of new urban blocks and the living environments, which have shaped the identity of many newcomers. Bolzanism, through a research project and a related fieldwork with the inhabitants, intends to investigate and communicate the evolution of the living conditions in some of the most significant social housing units, from the construction phase till today, aiming at recovering and redefining, together with the inhabitants, the identity of these highly intense places. Through the investigation of the historical evolution of the city, the organization of public meetings with the inhabitants, the narration of the spatial and social history of the housing units in which they live and the reception of their associated micro-stories, we intend to start a process of collective confrontation, conceived as an occasion to redefine the collective identity of these housing complex and to start discussing about the future of their communities with new interpretations and new tools. This process is conceived to promote a participatory process that can be further extended to the redefinition of the communal spaces, the improvement of the neighborhood and the planning of the western part of the city, increasing the perception and the recognition of material and immaterial collective assets.
La città di Bolzano/Bozen ha subito nel corso del XX secolo un’espansione territoriale e demografica considerevole, che ne ha stravolto rapidamente i caratteri architettonici e sociali, trasformando l’originale borgo agricolo e mercantile di metà Ottocento nella complessa realtà urbana in cui viviamo oggi. Un ruolo fondamentale in questo processo di crescita ricade sui complessi residenziali popolari, che storicamente nella realtà bolzanina hanno rappresentato la cellula base nella costruzione dei nuovi quartieri e il principale elemento di identità delle nuove comunità insediate. Bolzanism, attraverso uno studio ed un riscontro diretto sul campo con gli abitanti, mira a ricostruire e rappresentare l’evoluzione dell’abitare, dall’epoca della loro costruzione ad oggi, di alcuni tra i più significativi complessi residenziali popolari del ‘900, con l’obbiettivo di riscoprire assieme ai protagonisti l’identità sopita di luoghi dalla forte intensità sociale. Attraverso lo studio della dinamica evolutiva della città, l’organizzazione di incontri con gli inquilini e il racconto condiviso della storia del- l’edificio in cui abitano e delle loro “micro-storie”, si avvia un processo di confronto che coinvolge le persone stesse nella ridefinizione della propria identità collettiva e nell’immaginare il futuro della propria comunità coniugandolo con nuovi strumenti e nuove interpretazioni. Tale percorso è pensato per avviare dinamiche di coinvolgimento dei cittadini nella partecipazione alla pianificazione del futuro dei propri luoghi, dei propri quartieri e della città e per stimolare una maggior sensibilità nei confronti dei beni comuni tangibili e intangibili.
