The area on which the new Kindergarten will be built is located on a hill at the mouth of the Muggio Valley. The site has a very high landscape value and is characterized by its natural elements: the extensive green meadows, the wood that defines the eastern edge, the row of trees at the entrance. The Elementary School itself, designed by architect Finzi in 1974, expresses great respect for the existing natural landscape. For this reason the project tries to solve the functional needs of the new complex, maintaining the current context as much as possible. The new Kindergarten ideally continues the existing rows of trees and emerges with just a single floor, aligning itself with the entrance porch of the Elementary School. The arcade space surrounding the future School is the link between the old and the new project volume.
The building looks like a sequence of volumes made with stampfbeton on which rests a wooden roof with exposed beams. The roof creates a large porch around the whole building, connecting with the existing one that leads to the Elementary School. The blocks alternate with open spaces on the landscape, glazed to the south and north, in a clear sequence of served and serving spaces. this sequence of spaces allows a simple and rational organization, allowing children a great ease of orientation.
The main spaces of the sections such as the classrooms for quiet activities and the space for moving activities open up towards the garden through large windows, allowing a direct visual contact between the inside and the outside. Large skylights put the upper and lower floors in a visual relationship. Finally, the stampfbeton’s volumes express the materiality of the raw earth and evoke the relationship of the new school with the natural context and with the excavation that will take place to house it. The wooden roof evokes instead the traditional structures of the ‘pergola’ that characterize the Ticino area, recalling at the same time the character of the Finzi’s building.
L’area sulla quale si realizzerà la nuova Scuola dell’Infanzia si trova su un promontorio all’imbocco della Valle di Muggio. Il lotto presenta un elevatissimo valore paesaggistico ed si caratterizza per i suoi elementi naturali: gli estesi prati verdi, il bosco che definisce il margine ad est, il filare di alberi all’ingresso. La Scuola Elementare stessa, progettata dall’architetto Finzi nel 1974, esprime attraverso la sua architettura grande rispetto per il paesaggio naturale esistente. Per questo motivo il progetto tenta di risolvere le esigenze funzionali del nuovo complesso, salvaguardando il più possibile il contesto attuale. Il nuovo edificio prosegue idealmente il filari di alberi esistente ed emerge di un solo piano allineandosi al portico d’ingresso della Scuola Elementare di cui ne costituisce il prolungamento. Lo spazio porticato che circonda la futura Scuola costituisce il raccordo fra il vecchio e il nuovo volume di progetto.
L’edificio si presenta come una sequenza di volumi realizzati in stampfbeton sui quali poggia una copertura in legno con travi a vista. La copertura crea un’ampio portico attorno a tutto l’edificio raccordandosi con quello esistente che conduce alla Scuola Elementare. Ai blocchi in stampfbeton si alternano spazi aperti sul paesaggio, vetrati verso sud e verso nord, in una chiara sequenza di spazi serviti e spazi serventi. questa sequenza di spazi permette una organizzazione semplice e razionale, consentendo ai bambini grande facilità di orientamento.
Gli spazi principali delle sezioni come le aule per le attività tranquille e lo spazio per le attività in movimento si aprono verso il giardino attraverso grandi vetrate, permettendo un contatto visivo diretto tra l’interno e l’esterno. Ampi lucernari mettono in relazione visiva il piano superiore con quello inferiore. Infine i volumi in stampfbeton esprimono la matericità della terra cruda ed evocano la relazione della nuova scuola con il contesto naturale e con lo scavo che si realizzerà per ospitarla. La copertura in legno evoca invece le tradizionali strutture delle pergole che caratterizzano il territorio ticinese, richiamando allo stesso tempo il carattere dell’edificio del Finzi.
