The project aims to create the new Cinema Palace of Locarno close to the historic centre. The competition site lies on the mediaeval cluster of the city, belonging to the monumental area of the Visconteo Castle and occupying exactly the old fortified harbor. The intention is to expose the old ruins of the harbour regaining the relationship with the water and recalling the ancient and fundamental connection that Locarno always had with its lake. Therefore our first design choice was to recover the ruins of the original mediaeval walls sorrounding them with water. The main façade of the building is characterized only by a big archway that evokes the “portici” of Piazza Grande and protects the ancient harbour’s tower. The foyer of the Palace, lightened by a skylight, is designed as vast inner space, closed by the volumes of the three new cinemas.
Il progetto prevede la realizzazione del nuovo Palazzo del Cinema di Locarno a ridosso del centro storico. L’area prescelta per il progetto costituisce parte del nucleo medievale della città, appartenendo all’area monumentale del Castello Visconteo di Locarno ed occupando, più specificatamente, il sedime del vecchio porto fortificato. Restituire visibilità alle rovine dell’antico porto recuperando il rapporto con l’acqua evoca l’atavica e fondamentale connesione che Locarno ha sempre avuto con il lago fin dall’epoca medievale. Recuperare le rovine dell’originale cinta muraria ed immergerle in una grande vasca è stata quindi la prima scelta progettuale. La facciata è caratterizzata solamente da un grande portico che evoca gli ambienti della vicina Piazza Grande e che protegge l’antica torre del porto, mentre un ampio spazio, definito dai volumi delle tre sale cinematografiche e illuminato zenitalmente, costituisce il foyer di tutto il complesso.
