The project involves the construction of the new sport center for the Municipality of St. Martin in Passeier. The sport area is located close to the eastern urban area of the settlement, squeezed between the main road and the Passirio river, and is characterized by an outdoor swimming pool complex built in the late 1960s and four tennis courts, of which the northernmost one is used in winter as an ice rink. The municipality’s need was to have a new main building located in the area between swimming pools and tennis courts, so that it could would become the center for all sport activities in the area. To improve functional communication and relationship between the various activities, the ground level of the new sport center was raised to the level of the promenade and the pedestrian bridge over the Passirio, compensating the difference in height between the swimming pool area and the tennis courts. The design concept splits the program into two distinct rectangular volumes, which shifting between each other generate a new external space and a new entrance. The new generated space is a small square located at the crossroads between the pedestrian path that leads from the village to the pedestrian bridge over the Passirio and the new access to outdoor swimming pool complex. A large roof extending on all four sides characterizes the volumes above ground, generating a simple and clear horizontal element that can frame the landscape beyond the building, with the high mountains of Val Passiria. The plan of the main building consists of a sequence of full and empty volumes. A first fully glazed volume contains the bar overlooking the square, the tennis courts to the south and the pool complex to the north. The large overhanging roof and the large sliding windows expand the internal space towards the outside in a single continuum space. A second compact block, totally clad in wood, encloses the toilets of the bar, the kitchen and a more intimate “stube” overlooking the tennis courts. A third empty volume defines the main entrance to the sports center with a large glazed corridor leading to the basement. The building ends with a final compact block, made with exposed black concrete that contains the changing rooms and toilets for the tennis courts and the pools. These internal spaces are illuminated by large zenithal skylights to emphasize the internal/external relationship between different environments and to ensure privacy to the users. In the basement there are spaces dedicated to ice sports, the public toilets, the association room, technical rooms and deposits, revealing its presence only on the side south facing tennis courts/skating rink. In the secondary building located aboveground near the pedestrian bridge over the Passirio there are further technical spaces serving the swimming pools (lifeguard room, first room rescue, storage), a small garage for the ice resurfacing machine and an area usable for rental and storage of bicycles. In order to generate differentiated atmospheres and specific characters to the each space of the project, different materials have been used and combined: concrete, wood, glass, resin, ceramic and stone. The exposed concrete walls are differentiated by two colors and have a sandblasted surface. The darker version is obtained with the addition of natural pigments and local aggregates in order to be better integrated with the natural tones of the context. The same aggregates were used for the washed concrete flooring of the square and the external pedestrian paths. Larch wood was chosen for the windows frames and the cladding of the internal “stube” of the bar, to ensure a warm atmosphere to the rooms. The colored resin on the ground and the colored tiles on the walls have been used to characterize the changing rooms and the toilets of the various sports activities. Finally, wood was chosen again for the furnishings together with the local stone – the gneiss of the Val Passiria- , combining traditional materials in a contemporary way and evoking, within a modern building, the local building atmospheres.
Il progetto prevede la realizzazione del nuovo centro sportivo del Comune di San Martino in Passiria. La zona sportiva è collocata immediatamente ad est dell’insediamento urbanizzato del paese, stretta tra la strada statale ed il fiume Passirio, caratterizzata da un complesso di piscine all’aperto edificato sul finire degli anni ’60 e da quattro campi da tennis, quello più a nord dei quali utilizzato in inverno come pista da pattinaggio su ghiaccio. L’esigenza del committente era quella di creare un nuovo edificio ubicato nell’area a cavallo tra piscine e campi da tennis che diventasse il centro per tutte le attività sportive della zona.
Per permettere una comunicazione funzionale tra le diverse attività la quota del nuovo centro sportivo è stata sollevata alla quota della passeggiata e del ponte pedonale sul Passirio, raccordando attraverso l’edificio il dislivello presente tra l’area delle piscine e quella dedicata al tennis. Il progetto ha poi scomposto il programma in due volumi rettangolari distinti, che scartando uno rispetto all’altro generano un nuovo spazio pubblico esterno. Si tratta di una piccola piazza collocata all’incrocio fra il percorso pedonale che dal paese conduce al ponte pedonale sul Passirio e il nuovo accesso al complesso di piscine all’aperto. I volumi fuori terra sono caratterizzati da un ampio tetto aggettante su tutti e quattro i lati, che costituisce un forte segno orizzontale nel paesaggio oltre il quale emergono le possenti montagne della Val Passiria.
La pianta dell’edificio principale si compone di una sequenza di volumi pieni e vuoti. Un primo volume completamente vetrato ospita il bar affacciato sulla piazza, sui campi da tennis a sud e sul complesso delle piscine a nord. L’ampio tetto aggettante e le grandi vetrate scorrevoli dilatano lo spazio interno verso l’esterno in un unico continuumspaziale. Un secondo blocco compatto totalmente rivestito in legno ospita i servizi igienici del bar, la cucina e una stube più intima affacciata sui campi da tennis. Segue un terzo volume vuoto che costituisce l’ingresso principale al centro sportivo con un ampio corridoio vetrato che conduce al piano seminterrato. Conclude l’edificio un ultimo blocco compatto in cemento faccia a vista che accoglie gli spogliatoi e servizi igienici del tennis e delle piscine. Questi ultimi sono illuminati da grandi lucernari zenitali per enfatizzare la relazione interno/esterno tra i diversi ambienti.
Il piano interrato, che ospita gli spazi legati allo sport su ghiaccio, i servizi igienici pubblici, la sala associazioni, locali tecnici e depositi, rivela la sua presenza unicamente nel lato sud rivolto verso i campi da tennis/campo da pattinaggio.
Nell’edificio secondario fuori terra posizionato in prossimità del ponte pedonale sul Passirio trovano posto ulteriori spazi a servizio delle piscine (locale bagnino, locale primo soccorso, deposito), un piccolo garage della macchina rasaghiaccio ed un’area utilizzabile per il noleggio e deposito delle biciclette.
Per conferire atmosfere e caratteri unici ai singoli spazi del progetto si è lavorato con materiali diversi: cemento, legno, vetro, resina, ceramica e pietra. Il cemento è stato realizzato faccia a vista in due tonalità con superficie sabbiata. La versione più scura è stata ottenuta con l’aggiunta di ossido di ferro e inerti locali in modo integrarsi meglio con i toni naturali del contesto. Gli stessi inerti sono stati utilizzati nella pavimentazione in cemento lavato della piazza e dei percorsi pedonali esterni.
Per i serramenti e il rivestimento della stube e del bar è stato scelto il legno di larice che conferisce calore e atmosfera agli ambienti.
La resina colorata a terra e le piastrelle colorate sulle pareti sono state utilizzate per caratterizzare gli spogliatoi e i servizi igienici delle diverse attività sportive.
Infine per l’arredo si è scelto nuovamente il legno e poi la pietra locale -il gneiss della Val Passiria- per lavorare con materiali tradizionali in modo contemporaneo ed evocare, seppur all’interno di una costruzione moderna, la tradizione costruttiva locale.
